CHAPTER NINE
âAunt Daisy Mae?â I asked, approaching her carefully.
She was sitting next to the pool at the hotel and was reading a magazine.
âYes, dear?â she asked, lowering the magazine.
Jasper was in his cat carrier on my back. The last time I had checked up on him, he had been sleeping peacefully.
âI need your help,â I said slowly.
Aunt Daisy Mae had one foot out the door, figuratively, and I was afraid that she would say no to my request, which made it hard for me to approach her. However, I couldnât face my next task alone.
After Rachel had let that revelation slip, her eyes widened, and she immediately clammed up. She had left soon after, but my mind was already in turmoil. It was clear that things had gotten out of hand during the divorce, but I felt that I needed to talk to Detective Sterling in person. It wasnât fair that his name was being dragged through the mud and he wasnât getting to tell his side of the story. He was being accused of a heinous crime, and he deserved to speak out in his defense.
That meant that I needed to go visit him, but I felt that I needed backup.
âOf course,â Aunt Daisy Mae said, sitting up with a look of concern. âWhatâs going on?â
I told her all about what had happened over the past few days, and as I spoke, her face became increasingly drawn.
âOh, honey,â she said when I was done, âwhy didnât you tell me about any of this?â
âYouâre busy preparing for your Europe trip,â I reminded her. âI didnât want to bother you with all of this drama. Besides, after what happened last timeâ¦â
âLast time was traumatic for both of us,â she agreed, âbut that doesnât mean that Iâm a fragile little creature now! I want to help you, always. So, you think that we should talk to Detective Sterling?â
âYes,â I said firmly, âI need to hear his side of the story before I just give up on him.â
âThat wonât be easy,â Aunt Daisy Mae warned. âTrying to get that man to talk about anything personal is like trying to pull out your own teeth. Heâs difficult, make no mistake.â
âI know, but I have to keep trying. We both know what itâs like to be accused of something so horrible. Itâs even worse when no one cares about what you have to say for yourself.â
âFair enough,â Aunt Daisy Mae said. âAll right, Iâm in. Do you know where his house is?â
I nodded and felt a wave of relief wash over me. Aunt Daisy Mae was still in my corner. After she had changed her bathing suit to something more appropriate, we headed over to Detective Sterlingâs apartment. He lived in an affluent part of town where people built massive houses. His building used to be one huge house before the owner decided to divide it into three separate apartments. He lived on the top floor and shared a yard with a young newly married couple.
